LOD Meshes and Textures

There's an excellent explanation for LOD meshes and textures here.

To quote Dubious from the old Bethesda forums:

A "black surface" in a normal texture is an indicator of a missing "normal map" (*_n.dds) file.  The equivalent for LOD terrain is a "*_fn.dds" file.  Far objects use a "*_far.nif" file.
See the TESTG "Utilities" LOD/VWD Generatorssection for which tools can automatically generate which missing versions of these files.
